About Us

Bio
Nat is a non-binary eclectic artist from Portland, OR in their mid-twenties who enjoys exploring various mediums (wire, jewelry, ceramics, glass fusing, sewing, and painting) and combining various styles (impressionism, realism, cubism, and abstraction).
Nat’s art expresses their path towards finding their roots, aims to inspire others to create and looks deep within as a tool to create masterpieces. Nat has a desire to expand and refine their abilities and artistic expression through experimentation, application, and teaching others with a lens of inclusion, community, equity and culture.
They’ve participated in two student gallery exhibits at Mt Hood Community College, a raku ceramic firing demo at Troutdale Art Festival where MHCC partnered with Pacific Northwest Sculptors, as well as participated in two student sales; one at MHCC, and one at Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Artist Statement
An eclectic being full of whimsical expression, I am a native Oregonian who was adopted from a very young age and express my multicultural exploration within my art. I come from a background of African, European, and a little indigenous heritage. I strive to convey authenticity and deep introspective thinking in my art. I enjoy when someone views my work and their initial reaction includes the word “interesting”or “fascinating”. I enjoy including symbolism in my work and I often like to make pieces that express ethereal or whimsical qualities while still expressing empowerment behind the message I want to send with my work. I tend to play with a lot of different styles, so my art can be all over the place. Some examples being Avant-garde, figurative, literal, and conceptual pieces.
While I have a passion for the aesthetic, I also strive to focus on functionality. I appreciate testing how far I can push a nonfunctional object into a functional work. Stretching the bounds of functionality can be seen in my raku incense holders or my upcycled glass fused works. While not every piece is completely upcycled I do try to make a point of upcycling as much as I can. If an experiment doesn’t work out, I try to creatively reuse the materials and go from there. I tend to put a lot of introspection into “the why” when I’m creating a piece of art. I want to convey an understanding of why I created what I did but also leave room for the audience to reflect and, ideally, connect with the meanings they find that might differ from my initial intentions. For example, when I created my first raku incense holder my “why” was to connect aesthetic, functionality, non-functionality, and the feel of exploration with spirituality and cultural significance. It wasn’t a perfect piece, and had many mistakes but I learned a lot from them on how to improve from there.
